Responsibilities
- Own backend work on product features: route contracts, response shapes, and the schema underneath.
- Write and tune the SQL behind data retrieval and updates.
- Implement authentication and the ownership rules that scope queries to the right account.
- Build the React screens that consume these endpoints.
- Contribute to AI-assisted functionality in the product.
Challenges
- Most of the work started in code I had not written, with conventions I had to infer. Reading the surrounding code before changing it turned out to be faster than guessing.
- Queries that were fine against sample data behaved differently at production volumes, so understanding a query came before improving it.
What I learned
- Correctness that matters belongs in the database, not only in application code.
- Small, reviewable changes get merged; large ones get questions.
- Matching the conventions already in a codebase matters more than personal preference.
